Mithiya Season 2 Review

Directed by Kapil Sharma (not to be mistaken for the comedian), Mithiya Season 2 continues highlighting the ongoing clash between Juhi Chaturvedi (Huma Qureshi) and Rhea Rajguru (Avantika Dassani). The show – which uses the tagline ‘The Darker Chapter’, opens with Juhi talking to social media and informing her followers that her book ‘Dhundh’ is plagiarised from the manuscripts of another upcoming author. The narrative then goes into flashbacks and reveals all that happened that led to Juhi incriminating herself.

The 6-episode-long introduces us to a couple of new characters, including Amit Chaudhary (Naveen Kasturia) – an IT engineer-turned-amateur writer who accuses Juhi of plagiarizing his short story. In this season, we see Rhea back for revenge and willing to cross as many lines as needed to get what she wants. Will she succeed in winning this time? Does Juhi finally escape the dangers Rhea poses to her and her family? Will the half-sisters patch up? Who dies this season and what are the many mysteries it includes? To know all the answers to these questions, you will have to watch Mithiya Season 2; and here’s our review of it.

What Works

Huma Qureshi’s intense acting.

What Doesn’t Work

The several twists, turns and cliffhangers that do little to nothing to keep you hooked as the thrilling mysteries unsolved.

Technical Analysis

Story

Mithiya 2 has too much going on and fails to do justice to it all despite being over 200 minutes long. The series begins with Juhi going live on social media to tearfully tell her fans, followers and colleagues that her just-released book Dhundh is not an original piece but is in fact plagiarised from the manuscripts of upcoming author Amit Chaudhary. The show then goes into flashback mode and shows us Amit meeting Juhi during a book signing event in Mumbai when he threatens her with legal action for her copying his book word for word.

At the same time, we also see Rhea is back and is putting on a lovable front to earn the respect and love of her biological father Anand Tyagi  (Rajit Kapur). This includes funding a library to be named after him, saving Juhi’s son Yash from danger and more. But has she really reformed? Well, no. While Dr Tyagi attempts to bribe Amit with Rs 50 lakhs to not make further plagiarism claims, Juhi’s 6th sense tells her that Rhea, in all probability, has planted Amit to falsely accuse Huma’s character of what she accused her in season 1. There is also a subplot involving inspector Suman Yadav which falls entirely flat.

Direction

Kapil Sharma has failed to impress us with Mithiya: The Darker Chapter. It seems long and never-ending and fails to keep one glued to their screens despite continuous high.

Star Cast

Huma Qureshi does justice to Juhi and manages to stand out with her portrayal of emotions be it via of her facial expression or body language. Avantika Dassani fails to sustain the impact she created when playing Rhea in season 1. While still out to get her revenge, Rhea is now also trying to gain the approval of her biological father but fails to convince us of her efforts. Her dialogue delivery seems monotonous and lacks voice modulation.

Naveen Kastura as Amit Chaudhary adds some much-needed spice to this bland psychological thriller; however, he too begins to falter owing to a weak script. The other characters also try to do justice to their characters but fail to match the level they set in season 1.

Conclusion

Kapil Sharma’s Mithiya 2 is a psychological thriller that, despite having cliffhangers and twists in every episode, fails to make you binge-watch. The series seems longer than it actually is and makes you wonder why couldn’t the script be more crisp. PS: Makers, if a show is loved, don’t make a sequel only to ride on its success; make content that will keep people hooked to it till the end.
